Shot between California and the artist’s home country of Peru, the film unfolds where oceans, caves, tides, and shifting coastal landscapes begin to echo one another, gradually losing their distance.
At its center, a ritual performed by Elsa, a healer from Pacasmayo whose practice is rooted in Moche tradition, unfolds through gesture, invocation, and elemental forces. A space opens where transformation quietly takes hold, and where the visible begins to give way to unseen forces. Existing somewhere between invocation and spell, Levantada approaches landscape as a living field where the material and immaterial meet.
Over the past decade, Andrea Franco has been creating a body of work consisting on 16mm films focusing on the Pacific Ocean, extending from her homeland of Peru to California. Often in the films the landscapes become merged and it becomes unclear which location is depicted, introducing a sense of interconnectedness and a parallel relationship between Peru and California. The work is informed by personal journey, ancestry, mysticism, and the natural world.
