Tracing the waters of the Santa Barbara Channel and the passage surrounding the Channel Islands, La Marea follows the ocean as a place where memory, migration, and unseen worlds converge.
Guided by the belief of many coastal tribes that the souls of the dead travel west over the ocean, the film explores the sea as a threshold between the living and the departed. Through tides, light, and shifting currents, ancestral cosmologies intertwine with contemporary stories of exile and return.
Created in dialogue with Bryan Senti’s musical composition, part of a larger body of work inspired by his father’s exile from Cuba by sea, La Marea carries these oceanic crossings into a shared reflection on displacement, remembrance, and the invisible forces that continue to move through us.
